Secrets of the Trade
Primary Stages ANTC $487/week minimum.
1st rehearsal: June 30, 2010. Runs July 27 – September 4.
New York premiere. In show business, it’s all about who you know. Or is it? Andy Lipman, a smart, ambitious kid from Long Island, dreams of a career on Broadway and hopes that his idol, theatre legend Martin Kerner, can give it to him. Will Kerner open Andy’s door to success, or will their complicated relationship force Andy to question a life in the theater?
Seeking:
Andy Lipman: Jewish. Begins the play at age 16, spends most of the story from 18 - 22, ends at age 26. Smart, ambitious kid from Long Island. Dreams of a life in the theatre and hopes his idol, Martin Kerner, can give it to him. Through the course of the play, Andy transforms from sweet, hopeful boy to angry young man, finding peace at the end by adjusting his expectations. Seeking an actor with stage experience and training; must be equally adept at both comedy and drama.
Peter Lipman: Jewish, 50 - 55. Andy’s father. Moderately successful architect. Encouraging and supportive, he is a full believer in his son’s abilities. The cheerleader of the family and “good cop” to mom Joanne’s occasional “bad cop”. Though possessed of a good sense of humor and a refined sense of decorum, Peter is capable of standing up for Andy and also pushing for his son’s future. Seeking an actor who is equally adept at both comedy and drama.
Joanne Lipman: 50 - 55. Andy’s mother, a high school teacher and former dancer. Faded beauty. Fierce protector of her son. Self-conscious with her students. Worries about aging and becoming out of touch.
Bradley: 40 - 45. Kerner’s personal assistant of many years. Once the “golden boy” himself, he is now a part of Kerner’s daily life, and the gatekeeper of his professional and social life.
Martin Kerner: CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. 60 – 65. Famous writer and director for the Broadway stage. And icon. Brilliant and charismatic older man. As charming and invested as he can be, then as dismissive and heartbreaking in the next moment.
