STORYLINE: “BROKEN” is a no-pay New York Film Academy student project set in New York City. A poor, jobless, widowed father does his best to take care of his 7-year-old son. One day, they walk together in downtown Manhattan and the young boy eyes a toy in a window front. When the father inquires about how expensive the toy is, he realizes twenty dollars is too much of an expense given their impoverishment. Disappointed, the son begins to cry as the father escorts him back to their run-down apartment. Though the father makes attempts to seek out jobs, he is rejected everywhere he applies. Feeling inadequate because he is unable to afford even the smallest of gifts for his son, the father impulsively returns to the toy store and successfully steals the same toy his son was admiring days earlier. Feeling accomplished, he walks back to his apartment only to get beaten up by a group of punks. They quickly abandon the father, sprawled across the pavement turning his head towards the broken toy.
